Airway maintenance is the first step in any emergency resuscitation of a critically ill patient. It is followed by maintenance of breathing and circulation. This is called ABC of advanced trauma life support.
When a patient is unconscious maintenance of air way is the first step. Simple techniques like keeping the patients in three quarter prone position, jaw thrust and clearing of mouth and throat and inserting an oropharyngeal airway can be tried as the first step.
If these measures do not secure the air way, it is important to intubate the patient in order to maintain breathing. It should be done by a competent doctor and the training was given using live models. The techniques of inserting the tubes and the medication usage during resuscitation and after intubation was also discussed.
