NGNS in association with Lanka hospital has arranged another CME program for the Nurses and doctors in Lanka Hospital on 24/ 10/2023. Dr. Upul Wickramarachchi who is a leading cardiologist did the guest lecture on early detection and management of acute cardiac event.
Dr. Prasanna Gunasena head of NGNS team explained the importance of timely intervention of any cardiac event of peri-operative patients failing which a patient’s life can be at risk.
If a patient coming for surgery or immediate post-operative period gets unusual chest pain, high heart rate, low blood pressure breathlessness or any ECG changes warrants immediate attention by a cardiologist.
Early warning score chart is developed to detect any cardiac event early and take timely action to prevent any serious results.
Primary contact nurse or the doctor should give a good hearing to the patients complain. This will enable the rest of the team to attend to the problem early. Refereeing a pre-operative patient to a cardiologist at least two weeks before surgery is needed in order to optimize his comorbidities. Last moment echo cardiogram alone will not be of much use. Any patient who is above 60 years or having history of exertional dyspnea or diabetes hypertension and hyperlipidemia should ideally be seen by a cardiologist before surgery
