Today (10-05-2013) workshop done on tracheostomy care and management by consultant ENT surgeon Dr. Sobitha at Lanka hospitals training Centre.
tracheostomy is an artificial airway created for therapeutic purposes through the upper trachea. This workshop was conducted in collaboration with the ENT department Lanka hospitals. Dr. Sobitha Abeyratne was the resource person who conducted the lecture during the work shop.
Tracheostomy is used in emergency situations as well as a planned procedure to facilitate maintenance of airway and breathing.
Tracheostomy is inserted from the front of the neck through a small horizontal incision and the tube is inserted through 3rd – 5th tracheal ring.
There are deferent sizes of tracheostomy tubes and the double lumen tubes are used when the patient goes home with the tracheostomy tube. Tube has to be kept clean always to prevent sudden obstruction to the airway due to mucous plugs.
There should be always an emergency kit available in the wards to attend to any emergency arises during tracheostomy management. It was instructed to all the wards to upgrade their standard operating protocol in the management of tracheostomies
