Cervical spine injury is a challenging problem and affect the young healthy people.
If it is not managed properly there are many long term consequences and disability associated with cervical spinal cord damage.
Now the Neurosurgical team lead by Dr. Prasanna Gunasena and Dr. Dilshan Munidasa assisted by Dr. Anil Weerasinghe perform navigation assisted C2 fusions at Lanka Hospitals.
Fracture of the upper cervical spine involving second cervical vertebra is a challenging problem to treat as there are many important blood vessels and nervous tissues closely associated with the second vertebra.
In order to place titanium screws to the C2 vertebra for the fixation of the spine, Neuro navigation is used. It is a computer assisted system where the computer guides the screw placement real time with 3 D images.
So far more than 50 patients were done using this technique and the patients are usually discharged from the hospital within one or two days.
