An Interactive workshop was conducted by NGNS for the doctors and nurses at Lanka hospital on the management of post-operative acute pain management
Current method of managing post-operative pain is by patient controlled analgesia. Pain perception among deferent patients vary a lot. Therefor a visual analogue is used to assess the individual pain perception. The scale spread from one to ten. One is no pain while the 10 is unbearable pain.
Any patient should remain in the pain score of 1 to 2 if the pain is properly controlled. There are many methods to control pain. When the pain score is less than 4 out of 10 local therapies and oral medications are used. If the is worse subcutaneous and intravenous injections can be used.
Opioid analgesics can be safely used in the ward setting. However, it is important to closely observe the patient for any side effects of these medications. If a patient has any renal dysfunction it is advisable not to use NSAID drugs for the pain management.
